This is not a review but simply a suggestion. Why did the company not make the solar charge side with a twist like mechanism so that it could be flipped over and charge while you are reading for efficiency? I like this device but I would LOVE it if it had this capability and for the customers willing to spend this kind of money I think you will find a lot more will like it when it has that ability.

I’d been looking for this item as soon as I heard about the SolarKindle for the Kindle 4 (non-touch). As soon as it showed up on Amazon I placed my order. It arrived in due time, being one of the first shipments directly from the manufacturer in Taiwan. The included instructions were simple: Go grab the PDF from their website. Those instructions, formatted nicely for the Kindle, showed how to install the device in the cover, how to charge it, and information about the indicator lights. Guessing that English is not this company’s first language, but the instructions were well written and easy to understand.

I charged everything up via the computer the first time, which was in late April. I have not plugged either device in since – I put the cover in a sunlit window in the morning and retrieve it at night, and if the Kindle is low enough I trigger the cover’s internal battery to charge the Kindle for an hour. It doesn’t charge while I’m in my office at work, however my window is North facing and doesn’t get direct sunlight so that’s to be expected. The Kindle fits snugly in the case and doesn’t easily pop out – only once when I had everything propped up stupidly to catch more sunlight and the wind knocked it to the floor did the device come free, and the case protected it all the way to bouncing off the concrete below. A couple battle scars, but both devices lived to tell the tale – so not only will it charge up nicely but protects very well too!

The light is quite bright, and I’ve seen reviews of their other devices that some think it’s almost too bright. I do make sure not to angle the Kindle away from me while reading since the light would shine directly into my face, but that would be an uncomfortable reading angle anyway. The LED is bright enough to shine down the entire surface of the Kindle, and doesn’t feel like it leaves a “hot spot” near the top like some lights do. There’s a slight shadow where the top status bar is when you’re in the menus, which could make it hard to see your WiFi status or the status messages, but it’s not horrible just slightly difficult. The added heft of the case does make the device a bit heavier, which initially gave me pause since I’d used the Kindle without any case for months already, but I’ve become used to it and not bothered by it at all. Still very comfortable to lay down or sit holding the device one handed.

One other review suggested a swivel mechanism so that the solar panel could face out while you’ve got the cover flipped open for reading. I accomplish this when I can by turning so the sun is to my left and just holding the cover open as if reading a book. But even if I can’t charge it all the time, I’ve found with 1-3 hours of reading per night I still haven’t drained everything to the point I needed to plug it in, the solar panel is keeping up.

All in all, I love this cover. It does everything as advertised and works very well. If I ever need another case, I’ll get another one of these in a heartbeat. Well worth the cost. Will you recover the difference between the normal and solar cover by saving on recharging by plugging in? Well, you could do the math and figure that out, but the fact that I don’t *have* to plug it in is worth it to me – I can recharge by setting the Kindle on the dashboard while driving to work, and don’t have to deal with cables and adapters. That is worth the extra expense to me.
